Welcome to my design studio at 32 the strand, Derby. I have been sewing professionally for over 30 years, and now I have my own space to welcome my clients into. Based in the cultural Cathedral Quater , the shop is in a stunning grade 2 listed building, which has an elegant and historic feel.

Totally unique
I provide a full design and make service to clients that want a hand in creating their own garments. I specialise in Bridal and evening wear. I source the highest quality fabrics from my tried and tested suppliers. You are welcome to book in for an initial consultation, for a small fee, redeemable against the cost of your unique outfit. ABOUT ME
Where It All Started
My interest in fashion started young. My very talented mother is a dressmaker and the sewing machine was a permanent fixture in our house. I started sewing professionally at the age of 16 when I went to work as an alterations assistant. I studied fashion design at Btec level in Derby and then went to Cheltenham & Gloucester college of higher education to obtain my degree in Fashion Design and Technology. I worked for Chanticleer designer bridalwear and gleaned as many skills as I could. It was an outstanding experience and has given me a lifetimes worth of inspiration.
Moving back to Derby I decided to start from scratch and kept my hand in while I worked at various other jobs. In 2012 I became a full time self employed dressmaker, and I have been lucky enough to work with some fabulous clients on some amazing projects. I became a mum in 2014 and began sewing for Ashley's tailoring. In 2017 I became a bride and went back to Chanticleer for my own designer dress. I married Maciej in Poland and I never stop talking about how fabulous my wedding was.
I am now so proud to open my own shop, Ruth Day Atelier, and offer the skill and service that I have honed over the past 30 years.It’s important for me to keep my skills up to date and to keep learning. My approach is traditional with a modern edge. I offer sensible advice and an authentic, high-quality level of workmanship. My clients come away with a personalized level of service they don’t receive anywhere else.
